JURA X10 and X10c review: cold brew for the office

JURA X10 and X10c review: cold brew for the office

The JURA X10 is the professional JURA that makes cold brew at the touch of a button, next to espresso, cappuccino and the rest of a normal office menu. Nine of its 34 specialties come out cold. That is what sets the X10 family apart within JURA's X line.

There are two versions. The JURA X10 runs from a 5 liter water tank. The JURA X10c is connected to the water supply and keeps a smaller tank as a backup. Almost everything else is shared, so the real decision is about water, not about coffee.

Our verdict

  • Best at: a mixed office where some people drink espresso, others want milk, and a few want something cold in summer.
  • Right size for: a team of about 20 to 25 people. JURA recommends the X line for up to 80 cups a day.
  • Pick something else if: nobody drinks milk or cold coffee (look at the X4c), or you pour well over 80 cups a day (look at the GIGA X line).
  • Plan for: a milk cooler. It is not in the box, and milk that stands on the counter all day does not stay fresh.

X10 or X10c: the one choice to make

If there is a water tap within reach of the machine, take the X10c. It connects to a 3/8 inch thread, the fresh water kit is supplied, and nobody has to carry water. Its 2.8 liter tank is there for the days the machine has to stand somewhere else.

If there is no tap nearby, or the machine moves between rooms, the X10 is the simpler choice. Its 5 liter tank is lockable, like the bean container, so settings and contents stay in the hands of whoever looks after the machine.

There is a middle way. JURA lists the Fresh water kit X line as an accessory for the X10 (and for the X4, X6 and X8). A specialist installs it once; after that it fills the X10's tank automatically with mains water, and anyone can disconnect and reconnect it. The X10c remains the version built for a fixed connection.

The drink count is the same on both: 34 specialties. JURA lists nine cold drinks on the X10 and eight on the X10c.

What it makes, and how the cold brew works

The hot menu covers what an office expects: espresso, coffee, lungo, americano, cappuccino, latte macchiato, and hot water at three temperature levels. The cold drinks are the part people try first.

Cold brew as we make it at the roastery is slow. Our cold brew recipe steeps coffee ground for filter in cold water for 12 hours. The X10 cannot wait that long, so JURA uses what it calls the Cold Extraction Process: cold water is pushed through freshly ground coffee in slow pulses under high pressure. You get a cold coffee in the time it takes to make an espresso, with nothing to prepare the day before. It is a different drink from a 12-hour steep, and it should be judged as its own thing: a quick, cold, black or milky coffee for an office that otherwise only has hot drinks.

Grinder and settings

The X10 uses JURA's P.A.G.2+ grinder, fed from a 500 g bean container that can be extended to 1 kg. The brewing unit takes between 5 and 16 g of coffee per brew, and the machine uses JURA's Pulse Extraction Process (P.E.P.).

For each drink you can set the water quantity, the coffee strength (10 levels), the brewing temperature (3 levels) and the milk quantity and temperature. That range is what makes a good blend taste like itself. When we install an X10, we set the grind and strength with the first bag of our Houseblend, a full-bodied espresso blend with low acidity and notes of dark chocolate and cacao nibs, and adjust the main drinks before the team starts using it.

One grinder means one coffee at a time. If your office wants a decaf next to the regular blend, this is not the machine.

Milk

The HP3 milk system with an interchangeable CX2 milk spout switches automatically between milk and milk foam. The dual spout adjusts from 63 to 150 mm, so it fits an espresso cup as well as a tall latte glass, and it can serve two cups at once.

The milk pipe goes into a carton or a cooler next to the machine. A JURA Cool Control keeps the milk cold if it stays out all day; it is sold separately. JURA asks for a milk system clean every day milk has been used. That is a one-touch program with the cleaning container and mini tabs that come with the machine.

Living with it in an office

The X10 does not need a cleaner, but it does need one person who feels responsible for it. The daily routine is short:

  • Empty the grounds container and the drip tray while the machine is switched on, so it registers that they are empty.
  • Top up the tank with fresh water (X10 without the fresh water kit).
  • Run the milk system cleaning at the end of the day.

The grounds container holds about 40 servings. At 80 cups a day, that means emptying it at least twice. The drip tray is monitored, and the rinsing, cleaning and descaling programs are built in: the display tells you when to run them and what to add. The supplied CLARIS Pro Smart+ filter cartridge treats the water, and the machine signals when it needs replacing.

Payment and connectivity

For a shared space where coffee is paid for, the X10 is ready for payment systems via MDB, and JURA lists Pocket Pilot 2.0 and 3.0 and the MDB Interface 2.0 as options. Wi-Fi Connect V2 and Business Connect are listed for connecting the machine. These are accessories, not standard equipment, so tell us in your quote request if you need them.

How many people is it for?

JURA recommends the X line for up to 80 cups a day. Count about 3.3 cups per person per working day and you arrive at a team of around 24 people. Look at your peak as well: if everyone takes a coffee in the same ten minutes after a meeting, the queue matters more than the daily total. In that case, or above 80 cups a day, size up to the GIGA X line.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Cold brew at one touch, next to a full hot menu.
  • 34 specialties, with strength, temperature and volume set per drink.
  • Automatic switch between milk and milk foam, one-touch milk cleaning.
  • Choice between a 5 liter tank (X10) and a fixed water connection (X10c).
  • Lockable bean container and water tank.
  • Ready for payment systems via MDB.

Cons

  • Milk cooler not included.
  • One grinder: one coffee at a time, no separate decaf.
  • Grounds container of about 40 servings needs emptying more than once on a busy day.

When another JURA fits better

  • Black coffee only: the X4 and X4c have no milk system and are simpler to keep clean. Read our JURA X4 and X4c review.
  • A smaller team, up to 50 cups a day: the W8, without cold brew, in a body 29.5 cm wide. Read our JURA W8 review.
  • Cold brew and two beans for a small, demanding team: the GIGA W10, for up to 50 cups a day. Read our JURA GIGA W10 review.
  • More than 80 cups a day: the GIGA X line, which JURA rates for up to 200 cups a day. The GIGA X8 also has two grinders, so a second coffee or a decaf can sit next to your blend. Read our JURA GIGA X8 and X8c review.

Buying an X10 through OR Coffee

OR Coffee is listed by Bodart, the Belgian JURA importer, as an approved dealer for JURA professional machines. You can taste and try the X10 before you decide: at our roastery in Wetteren, or at your place. Once you order, we deliver and install the X10 or X10c, set it up with the 2 × 1 kg of Houseblend that comes with it, and do a tasting of our coffees with your team on site.

You can buy the machine outright, lease or rent it per month, or ask for a fixed price per cup that covers machine and coffee. Which option makes sense depends on how many cups you pour, so we work it out in the quote.

Frequently asked questions

Does the X10 need a water connection?

No. The X10 runs from its 5 liter tank. If you want it to fill itself, JURA's Fresh water kit X line connects it to the mains after a one-time installation by a specialist. The X10c is the version made for a fixed water connection, with a 3/8 inch thread, the kit in the box and a 2.8 liter backup tank.

Is the cold brew the same as cold brew from a café?

No. A café cold brew usually steeps for hours. The X10 pushes cold water through fresh grounds in slow pulses under pressure, so the drink is ready in about the time of an espresso, with no preparation.

Which coffee suits the X10?

Our Houseblend, our most popular coffee: it comes with the machine and is the coffee we set it up with on site. If your team wants more of an espresso-bar feel, take our Seasonal Blend: fruitier and livelier. For an office, the Houseblend subscription brings your beans every month. If you switch to another of our coffees later, adjust grind and strength to it.

Who cleans it, and how long does it take?

Your team, a few minutes a day: empty the grounds container and drip tray, top up water on the X10, and run the milk cleaning after milk drinks. The longer cleaning and descaling programs start from the display when the machine asks for them.

Can we try it before we buy?

Yes. We set up a tasting and demo at our roastery in Wetteren, or we come to you. Bring the people who will use it most.

What do we need on site?

A power socket and a stable surface of at least 37.3 × 46.1 cm, with room above for filling beans. For the X10c, also a water tap with a 3/8 inch thread within reach. Tell us what is there when you ask for a quote and we check the setup with you.

Want a quote or a demo? Request one on the JURA X10 page or the JURA X10c page. Tell us roughly how many people drink coffee and whether there is a tap nearby, and we come back with the version and formula that fit. A tasting before you decide is possible at our roastery in Wetteren or at your place; delivery, installation and a tasting with your team come with the machine.
